MARK 9:43-47
43And if thy hand offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched:
44Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.
45And if thy foot offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter halt into life, than having two feet to be cast into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched:
46Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.
47And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out: it is better for thee to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye, than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire:
Question:
Does this mean we will have to cut off our hands and feet that offend us, or pluck out our eyes?
These verses mean that we will lose our spiritual lives if we still love our old selves (sinful lives) and are unwilling to cast off the old man.
We are unable to receive life if we are reluctant to part with our old sinful selves, but we are able to preserve our lives for eternity if we hate our sinful lives. This is why as a metaphor (figure of speech) the Lord Jesus Christ said if our limbs commit sinful deeds and obstruct us from entering into life eternal, we must remove them (sinful deeds).
John 12:25 He that loveth his life shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal.
Rom. 8:13 For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.
We must mortify the deeds of the body through the Holy Spirit. If we are aware of any sinful deeds that lead us to perdition, we must rely on the Holy Spirit to remove and mortify them lest they cause our spiritual death.
Anyone who is reluctant to put off his sinful body still loves the world. Worldly lusts and lust of the eyes will lead him to perdition and be unable to receive eternal life. Therefore, we must completely remove the roots of sinful deeds from our bodies.
1Thess. 5:23 And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
The Bible records that we must put off our sinful deeds if we wish to receive eternal life. The Lord Jesus Christ wishes for us to preserve our sanctity. Hence, we must not live for the sake of our fleshly bodies but rather, for our bodies to achieve a state of blamelessness when He comes again.
Col. 3:5-9 5Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry: 6For which things' sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience: 7In the which ye also walked some time, when ye lived in them. 8But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth. 9Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds;
God’s wrath will be on us if we do not put off these sinful deeds. Therefore, we must keep the true Word and rely on the Holy Spirit to mortify our sinful deeds.
All glory be to the Lord Jesus Christ. Hallelujah, Amen.
