Q&A - THE CURSING OF THE FIG TREE

THE CURSING OF THE FIG TREE (2009 Annual Spiritual Meeting- Acts-12-0102)
Mark 11:13-1413And seeing a fig tree afar off having leaves, he came, if haply he might find any thing thereon: and when he came to it, he found nothing but leaves; for the time of figs was not yet. 14And Jesus answered and said unto it, No man eat fruit of thee hereafter for ever. And his disciples heard it.

Mark 11:20-2220And in the morning, as they passed by, they saw the fig tree dried up from the roots. 21And Peter calling to remembrance saith unto him, Master, behold, the fig tree which thou cursedst is withered away. 22And Jesus answering saith unto them, Have faith in God.

Q: What is the lesson behind the cursing of the fig tree?

Why did the Lord Jesus Christ then say “Have faith in God?”

The Lord Jesus Christ would never curse the fig tree for no apparent reason. When the Lord Jesus Christ came to the fig tree, He did not find any fruit on it, but only leaves. Did not the Lord Jesus Christ know that there was no fruit on the fig tree? Of course He knew about it, since it is recorded here that it is not the time of figs yet. The Lord Jesus Christ also told His servants to harvest the grain at a time when the grain has not ripened yet.

He wants to teach us true believers that we are like fig trees. If we do not bear fruit, then we will wither like the fig tree.

Mark 11:20-22 20And in the morning, as they passed by, they saw the fig tree dried up from the roots. 21And Peter calling to remembrance saith unto him, Master, behold, the fig tree which thou cursedst is withered away. 22And Jesus answering saith unto them, Have faith in God.

The fig trees which do not bear fruits will be cut down or cursed.

Luke 13:6-9 6He spake also this parable; A certain man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard; and he came and sought fruit thereon, and found none. 7Then said he unto the dresser of his vineyard, Behold, these three years I come seeking fruit on this fig tree, and find none: cut it down; why cumbereth it the ground? 8And he answering said unto him, Lord, let it alone this year also, till I shall dig about it, and dung it: 9And if it bear fruit, well: and if not, then after that thou shalt cut it down.

This parable of the non-fruit-bearing fig tree helps us understand that if we, as God’s true people who are like fig trees, occupy the ground in vain without bearing fruit, we will be cut down in the end.

Psa 1:3 And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.

A tree brings forth its fruit in its season. However, God wants His people to bear fruits at all times. The Scriptures teach us to love God with all our hearts, souls and mind, and that we should not stop the assembling of ourselves. The Lord Jesus Christ came looking for fruits on the fig tree. Similarly today, God measures us every day, judging our ways and deeds. He wants us to manifest the fruits of the Holy Spirit at all times to glorify His name. The Psalmist likens the blessed man to be like a tree planted by the rivers of water that brings forth its fruit in its season.

Rev 22:2 In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.

The tree of life yielded its fruit every month. We should not wait for the Lord Jesus Christ to come to us and find us without any fruit. If that happens, we will be accused of occupying the ground in vain and will be cut down. This is a warning to the people of God that we should manifest the image of God at all times and bear spiritual fruits to glorify God.

We must know and understand God’s power and authority, that the Lord Jesus Christ is God who created the heavens and the earth and everything in them. He has the authority to cause the fig tree which had not borne fruit to wither. The Lord Jesus Christ wanted His disciples to know His power and authority, that they might truly have faith in Him. The Lord Jesus Christ had emphasized in the four gospels that one must have absolute faith in believing in His power and authority.

This incident of the fig tree teaches us that we must have true faith in believing in the Lord Jesus Christ’s authority and power, that we may truly know the Lord Jesus Christ.
