MATTHEW 12:31-32

31Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men.

32And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come.

Why are Words Spoken against the Son of man Forgiven; but Words Spoken against the Holy Spirit Never Forgiven “Neither in this World, Neither in the World to Come”?

Our church preaches that the True God, the Lord Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit are one; and the Lord Jesus Christ was the Word made flesh and the Son of man. Therefore, the Lord Jesus Christ Himself is the Son of man and the Holy Spirit. However, why are words spoken against the Son of man forgiven, but words spoken against the Holy Spirit never forgiven, to such serious extent of “neither in this world, neither in the world to come”?

When the Word was made flesh and the Lord Jesus Christ was ministering on earth, He relied on the capability of the True God to cast out devils. Matthew 12:22-24 record of how the Lord Jesus Christ cast out a devil from a man who was blind and mute, and consequently the man was healed and could see and speak; however, when the Pharisees heard of this miracle, they accused the Lord Jesus Christ of relying on Beelzebub, the prince of devils.

The Pharisees had not spoken against the Lord Jesus Christ, but against the works and capabilities of the Holy Spirit. Why did the Lord Jesus Christ forgive them of their sin in speaking against Holy Spirit?

Luke 23:34   Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots.

This was because at that time, the Holy Spirit had yet to be poured down and the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of man, had yet to be glorified. Therefore, the words that the Pharisees spoke were against the Lord Jesus Christ and not the Holy Spirit. As the Pharisees were ignorant of their wrongdoing towards the Lord Jesus Christ, their sin was forgiven.

1Tim. 1:13   Who was before a blasphemer, and a persecutor, and injurious: but I obtained mercy, because I did it ignorantly in unbelief.

Similarly, before Paul accepted the Lord Jesus Christ and His teachings, he was extremely cruel because he persecuted and bound the disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ. He blasphemed against the True God. However, why did the True God forgive Paul’s sin? As Paul said, it was because he did it ignorantly in unbelief.

What Are The Differences Between The Son Of Man And The Holy Spirit?

To understand the differences between the Son of Man and the Holy Spirit, we have to understand the differences between before and after the downpour of the Holy Spirit.

i.  Before The Downpour Of The Holy Spirit

Before the downpour of the Holy Spirit, men did not have the Holy Spirit with them. Although they could see the miracles performed by the Lord Jesus, they did not know the Lord Jesus Christ and were spiritually blind. Therefore, they would naturally commit sin against the Son of Man, the Lord Jesus Christ.

When John the Baptist carried out the baptism of repentance, the men of the cities came to him to be baptised. Among them were the Pharisees and Sadducees. John the Baptist rebuked them saying: “O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?” (Luke 3:7). He further told them to “Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance” as a pre-condition to be baptised (Luke 3:8). Due to this, we may assume that the True God was displeased with the Pharisees. However, Chapter 3 of the book of John records of Nicodemus, a Pharisee, who knew how to seek after the Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, the Lord Jesus Christ did not abandon him, but exhorted him and spoke with him with regards to being born again. Although the Pharisees and Sadducees resisted His teachings many times, the Lord Jesus Christ was still willing to embrace them in His bosom. Thus, when the Lord Jesus Christ was the Son of Man, and the Holy Spirit had yet to be poured down; He still counselled them.

ii.  After The Downpour Of The Holy Spirit

However, after the downpour of the Holy Spirit, God’s power and capabilities were manifested; that men could see the authority of the Holy Spirit. If a man continues to speak or blaspheme against the works of the Holy Spirit, he is committing an unforgiveable sin.

Heb. 6:4-6   4For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost, 5And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come, 6If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame.

Heb. 10:26  For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins,

If man, having received the knowledge of God’s truth and witnessed the power of the Holy Spirit with his own eyes, continues to wilfully blaspheme and speak against the work of the Holy Spirit, he will not receive forgiveness in this world, nor the world to come. We can see this from the Biblical examples of Ananias and Sapphira; and Elymas the sorcerer.

After the downpour of the Holy Spirit upon the early believers on the day of the Pentecost, they were in one heart and one mind and shared their possessions (Acts 4:32). From time to time, believers who owned houses or land sold them and brought their proceeds from the sales, and put them at the apostles’ feet to be distributed to anyone as he had need (Acts 4:34-35). A man named Ananias, together with his wife Sapphira, also sold a possession. However, when they presented to Peter the sale proceeds, they kept back part of the money. They told Peter that they had donated the entire sum. As they had lied to the Holy Spirit, consequently, they collapsed and died (Acts 5:1-10).

From here, we understand the severity of lying to the Holy Spirit. To lie to the Holy Spirit is to blaspheme and despise the capabilities of the Holy Spirit. If any person speaks against the works and capabilities of the Holy Spirit, he will consequently never receive forgiveness for his sin.

Acts 13:8-12  8But Elymas the sorcerer (for so is his name by interpretation) withstood them, seeking to turn away the deputy from the faith. 9Then Saul, (who also is called Paul,) filled with the Holy Ghost, set his eyes on him, 10And said, O full of all subtilty and all mischief, thou child of the devil, thou enemy of all righteousness, wilt thou not cease to pervert the right ways of the Lord? 11And now, behold, the hand of the Lord is upon thee, and thou shalt be blind, not seeing the sun for a season. And immediately there fell on him a mist and a darkness; and he went about seeking some to lead him by the hand. 12Then the deputy, when he saw what was done, believed, being astonished at the doctrine of the Lord.

After the downpour of the Holy Spirit, even a sorcerer who resisted the truth suffered a severe consequence. This can be seen from the example of Elymas the sorcerer, as recorded in Acts 13:11.

Today, we are born of the Word and the Holy Spirit of God. Therefore, if we abandon our initial faith and deviate from the Word of God, the severity of our punishment will be unimaginable.

All glory to the Lord Jesus Christ. Hallelujah! Amen.
